Stroke Fact Sheet
Every 10 minutes someone in Australia experiences a stroke when
the blood supply to their brain is suddenly disrupted by a blocked,
broken or burst artery. There are two types of stroke: ischaemic (artery
blocked by a clot or plaque) and haemorrhagic (bleed in the brain).
This year, almost 60,000 fi rst or recurring strokes will occur with
around 20 per cent affecting people under 55. Stroke is Australia’s
second biggest killer and a leading cause of disability2 – at least
346,000 Australians have survived at least one stroke, most now live
